Good and Proper took the lead at once and stayed there until the final fence where Be Counted relinquished his stalking role. These two jumped the last together, but Be Counted landed running and drew away in the run to the finish.

Five horses entered the Virginia bred flat race, but on race day there were three scratches leaving only two starters. Speed Ahead and Galaxy Express raced as a team most of the race. With a quarter mile to run Speed Ahead established a 3/4 length lead. Galaxy Express remained a threat but could not cut into Speed Ahead's lead.

Virginia Envy and That's That set the early pace with Inverness in third. Inverness moved to second with one more time to go around while Virginia Envy continued on top. With about a quarter mile to run and with two fences remaining, Virginia Envy dropped back and Inverness took command. Paris Lady rallied belatedly for second but was never a threat to the winner, who won handily.

Eryx opened a comfortable lead in the early stages but Skydiving joined him at the second last fence. Upon landing Skydiving had the lead and held the lead to the finish. Mr. Fine Threads loomed in the stretch but proved to be second best. Eryx faded to third.
