Secret Soul opened a comfortable lead, but during the middle stages of the race he was forced to lose ground by a loose horse. He recovered and regained the lead; but when the field turned for home, Going For It and Hill Tie moved forward and took the lead approaching the finish. Both horses jumped an extra fence close to the finish line and were disqualified moving Secret Soul up to first.

Snobby Scamp set the early pace, but Rutledge Classic took the lead when the field was out of sight. Touchdowntony made his move with three furlongs to run, and these two jumped the last fence as a team with Rutledge Classic proving best in the run in from the last.

Old Timer made most of the running in a tightly bunched field. Foyle challenged him at the last fence but upon landing Old Timer found another gear and drew away in the stretch. This was trainer Richard Valentine's fifth consecutive win in the Rokeby Bowl.
